Alaska Travel Industry Association Endorses AGA Certification Program

Monday, February 14th, 2011

On January 27, 2011, the Alaska Travel Industry Association (ATIA) formally endorsed Adventure Green Alaska (AGA), the first certification program for sustainable tourism companies operating in Alaska.  ATIA is the state’s official tourism marketing association and represents over 1,000 members.

ATIA’s endorsement comes as welcome news to both AGA and AWRTA.  It was AWRTA and its members that developed the innovative program in 2008 to promote economic, social, and environmental sustainability within the tourism industry and provide an  incentive for businesses to improve their practices.  The program is now administered by an independent nonprofit organization.

“We are very pleased that ATIA has chosen to publicly support AGA,” said Kent John, AWRTA’s president and the owner of the Great Alaska Adventure Lodge.  “ATIA is the most influential tourism organization in the state.  Its leadership will raise the public’s awareness of AGA certification and give a big boost to sustainability within the travel industry.”

AGA is a completely voluntary program.  Businesses may qualify for Gold, Silver, or Bronze Level certification, earning the right to use the AGA label and participate in AGA promotional activities.  The current application period is open through March 31, 2011.  For more information, visit www.adventuregreenalaska.org.
