GOING GREEN: ADVENTURE GREEN ALASKA CERTIFICATION FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

Are you thinking about a vacation in Alaska but want to use sustainable tourism businesses that care about environment protection, wildlife conservation, preserving Native American cultures, and maintaining the quality of life in Alaska’s rural communities?  Are you confused by the multitude of adventure travel companies and tourism businesses that describe themselves as being “green” or “promoting ecotourism”?  The Adventure Green Alaska (AGA) Certification Program was created for visitors like you who want to support responsible tourism in Alaska.

AGA is a voluntary certification program that recognizes tourism businesses operating in Alaska that meet specific standards of economic, environmental, and social sustainability.  Businesses are awarded points for making positive contributions to the sustainability of local communities and economies, protecting the environment, addressing the threat of climate change, and for preserving Alaska cultures and respecting its history.  The Adventure Green Alaska certification program is administered by an independent Alaska nonprofit corporation.  The program encourages tourism businesses to evaluate their operations according to AGA criteria and determine whether they are using best responsible tourism practices.  Businesses may qualify for Gold, Silver, or Bronze Level certification, earning the right to display the AGA logo.

Businesses certified by AGA set high standards for environmental and wildlife protection and for cultural preservation for others in the tourism industry.  These organizations are progressive travel companies that know that outstanding Alaska adventure travel experiences can be best delivered using sustainable tourism practices.  By using one of these AGA certified businesses, you can help champion the cause of tourism businesses that benefit host communities while conserving Alaska’s wildlife and wild places.
