About AWRTA

Printer-friendly versionSend by email

The Alaska Wilderness Recreation & Tourism Association (AWRTA) is a nonprofit membership organization representing nature-based Alaska tourism businesses, individuals, and organizations who support sustainable tourism.

AWRTA’s members are committed to helping Alaska visitors to better understand what constitutes responsible travel and sustainable tourism.  Among AWRTA’s guiding principles is a belief that tourism should be shaped by a spirit of appreciation for Alaska’s unique environment and communities.  Member businesses and partners work with communities to protect and enhance quality of life, provide jobs and business opportunities, and create strong incentives for protecting Alaska’s wildlife, wilderness, and special places.  AWRTA businesses strive to ensure that their managers and staff fully embrace company policies and values which protect the environment, Native cultures, and the character and viability of local communities.

AWRTA advocates for the sustainability of Alaska’s natural and cultural resources, responsible tourism, and tourism planning.  AWRTA is a recognized voice for environmental and wildlife conservation in Alaska.  The organization regularly adopts public resolutions on key conservation issues.  For example, AWRTA opposes drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and developing the Pebble Mine in the Bristol Bay watershed.  While AWRTA does not oppose reasonable economic development, the Arctic Refuge and Bristol Bay watershed are spectacular, fragile ecosystems that support a thriving sustainable tourism industry.  Some AWRTA members also offer Alaska visitors the opportunity to directly participate in Alaska conservation efforts by donating to the Dollars a Day for Conservation program.

AWRTA members believe that by bridging the developing Alaska tourism industry and environmental and wildlife conservation efforts throughout the state, AWRTA will foster sustainability and respect for the environment and local cultures in Alaska for years to come.  For more information or to join AWRTA, please visit www.awrta.org.
