Wild & Scenic Rivers in Alaska

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

For four decades, the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act has protected America’s river heritage.  Rivers have not only defined our nation but our culture and identity.  In 1968, Congress recognized that many of our nation’s rivers were facing irreversible threats and took action to establish the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.  The goal of the system is to preserve rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition and protect these values for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

Alaska has a total of 25 designated wild and scenic rivers that make up over a quarter of the total miles in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.  Covering thousands of miles across the state, they journey through remote wilderness areas, national parks, preserves, monuments, and forests.  Whether they are spawned by glaciers, flow through expansive mountain ranges, or traverse Arctic tundra, these rivers offer amazing boating and backcountry opportunities for visitors of every experience level.  Although many of the rivers in Alaska are remote and require access by air there are countless opportunities to access these special places via the road system.

Rivers in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System are generally classified as wild, scenic, or recreational.  Wild river areas include rivers or sections of rivers that are free of impoundments and are generally inaccessible except by trail.  Wild rivers have essentially primitive watersheds or shorelines and unpolluted waters.  Scenic river areas include rivers or sections of rivers that are free of impoundments but are accessible in places by roads.  They have largely primitive watersheds or shorelines.  Recreational river areas include rivers or sections of rivers that are readily accessible by road or railroad, may have some development along their shorelines, and may have undergone some impoundment or diversion in the past.  The legacy of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System shines perhaps brightest in a place like Alaska where so many of the rivers run free and pure and in unadulterated state.  They are places where nature remains in a harmonious balance and where humans are merely visitors.
