Alaska Alpine Adventures

Since 1998, Alaska Alpine Adventures

Alaska’s far north includes the coastal regions of Arctic Alaska and Northwest Alaska as well as the massive Brooks Range.  Most of northern Alaska’s remote but uniquely beautiful landscapes lie above the Arctic Circle.  Alaska’s far north is home to the Inupiaq Eskimos, who have lived here without interruption for the past 10,000 to 15,000 years.  In fact, Alaska’s north hosts the greatest concentration of Inupiaq people in the world.  Many residents maintain a subsistence lifestyle.  Caribou, moose, seal, and fish provide a substantial part of their diet and help them maintain important ties to their ancestral ways.

The arctic coastal plain, or the “North Slope” of Alaska is a vast blanket of tundra dotted with lakes and ponds.  It contains some of the world’s most important breeding grounds for migratory birds and is visited seasonally by immense herds of caribou.  Some of Alaska’s harshest weather occurs during the long winter months but wild flowers flourish in the 24 hours of daylight that define the intense arctic summer.

The rugged Brooks Range lies south of the North Slope, running across northern Alaska for 1,150 kilometers.  Elevations range from 9,000 feet in the east to 3,000 feet in the west.  The slopes are often treeless, creating superb hiking opportunities and spectacular vistas.  From the highest peaks, rivers flow south to the Yukon River, north to the Beaufort Sea, and west to the Chukchi Sea.  The Brooks Range is an important big game area, supporting brown and black bear, wolf, wolverine, caribou, and Dall sheep.

Popular outdoor activities in the far north region include fishing, boating, hunting, and hiking. The region contains some of America’s most spectacular wilderness parks such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Kobuk Valley National Park , and Noatak National Preserve.
