Alaska Native American cultures represent approximately 16 percent of Alaska's residents, living both in Alaska’s urban centers and in over 200 rural villages and communities in the state. Many Alaska Natives Americans have retained their customs, language, hunting and fishing practices, and ways of living since the earliest of times.
Alaska's Native people are divided into eleven distinct cultures, speaking eleven different languages and twenty-two different dialects. In order to tell the stories of this diverse population of Native Americans, the Alaska Native Heritage Center is organized around five cultural groupings, which draw upon cultural similarities or geographic proximity.
Athabascans traditionally lived in Interior Alaska, an expansive region that begins south of the Brooks Range and continues down to the Kenai Peninsula. There are eleven linguistic groups of Athabascans in Alaska. Athabascan people lived along five major river ways: the Yukon, Tanana, Susitna, Kuskokwim, and Copper River drainages. Athabascans migrated seasonally, traveling in small groups to fish, hunt, and trap. Today, Athabascan Native Americans live throughout Alaska and the Lower 48, returning to their home territories to harvest traditional resources.
Southwest Alaska Native Americans are named after the two main dialects of the Yup'ik language, Yup'ik and Cup'ik. At the time of European contact, the estimated population of these groups was 500 in Nunivak, 13,000 in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, and 3,000 in Bristol Bay. The Yup'ik and Cup'ik still depend upon subsistence fishing, hunting and gathering for food. Elders tell stories of traditional ways of life to teach the younger generations about their heritage and share survival skills.
Inupiaq and the St. Lawrence Island Yupik People, or "Real People," are still hunting and gathering societies. These Native American peoples continue to subsist on the land and sea of north and northwest Alaska. Their lives revolve around the whale, walrus, seal, polar bear, caribou, and fish. To the people of this northern culture, the extreme climate is not a barrier, but a natural realm for a variety of mammals, birds, and fish harvested by the people for survival..jpg)
Aleut and Alutiiq peoples of south and southwest Alaska are maritime peoples. Water is their life, whether it's the creeks and rivers near the villages, the shore outside, or the vast waters of the North Pacific and Bering Sea. Knowledge of maritime resources and skill in harvesting them define the cycle of life in a village. The intense weather in this part of Alaska is the dominant factor in the day-to-day activities of the Native people who live there.
Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian share a similar Native American culture with important differences in language and clan systems. Anthropologists use the term "Northwest Coast Culture" to define the Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures, as well as those of other peoples indigenous to the Pacific coast, extending as far south as northern Oregon. The region from the Copper River Delta to the Southeast Panhandle is a temperate rainforest with precipitation ranging from 112 inches per year to almost 200 inches per year. Here the people depended upon the ocean and rivers for food and travel.
