Your big ship cruise alternative! Cruise

Alaska’s Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, located in one of the most dynamic regions in Alaska, was created to protect the area’s spectacular natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and prolific fisheries.  One of the least-visited parks in the U.S. National Park System, Lake Clark National Park is located on the Alaska Peninsula and is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” This Alaskan national park experiences among the highest frequencies of earthquakes in the world.  Two major mountain ranges, the Alaska and Aleutian Ranges, collide in the Lake Clark region to create the Chigmits, known for their astoundingly jagged mountains and vast glaciers.  The dramatic peaks of the Chigmits include two active volcanoes, Mount Redoubt and Mount Iliamna.

The national park contains 50 mile long Lake Clark and many other pristine lakes and free-flowing rivers.  Lake Clark National Park provides critical habitat for salmon, trout, and other fish and supports the Bristol Bay sockeye salmon fishery, one of the largest in the world.  This fishery is critical to the traditional lifestyle of this Alaskan region’s rural communities as well as supporting a thriving tourism industry.  Unfortunately for Alaska ecotourism, a mining company is now proposing to develop the enormous Pebble Mine in the Bristol Bay watershed near the park’s boundary.  Pebble would be one of the world’s largest copper and gold mines.

There are no roads to Lake Clark National Park, which is approximately 100 miles southwest of Anchorage.  The interior portions can be reached only by plane through saw-toothed glaciated passes.  Although there are no maintained trails in the park, many of the foothills and ridges are ideal for trekking on open tundra and offer stunning vistas.  Other outdoor recreation activities available in the park include fishing, alpine backpacking, mountaineering, cross-country skiing, and rafting.
